Phonics Didactics

Phonics didactics involves direct and explicit didactics on the common sound-spelling relationships in English.  Enquiry tells u.s. that students who have explicit education vs implicit teaching far surpass their peers.  Explicit instruction is disquisitional for students with learning differences.

Fluency Do

Students should be practicing fluency skills on a daily ground and in a screw fashion.  Meaning,  they larn new skills and constantly review and practice previously learned skills:

  • sight word decoding – student sees the give-and-take and reads it. EXAMPLE: Sees the word here and says, "here" or "h-eastward-r-east spells here."
  • sight discussion encoding – student hears the discussion and writes it. Instance: Student hears the discussion  "here, then writes the word "here".
  • blending and segmenting decodable words – students do decoding and encoding words.

Vocabulary

Students are explicitly taught vocabulary.  Equally nosotros know, some students enter school with express literacy exposure, so ongoing vocabulary instruction is essential.   During kindergarten, we dedicate time for vocabulary didactics during our interactive read-aloud time.  We also teach vocabulary during scientific discipline and social studies.

Assessments! Make Your Instruction is Data-Driven!

Continuous progress monitoring is essential!  This informs your educational activity.  I like to track data in 2 different ways. I bear a clipboard when I am giving lessons.  These anecdotal notes provide a quick visual cess, without stopping instruction and they tell me:

  • Can they write the letter (letter germination)?
  • Tin they produce the sound when they come across the letter? (decoding)
  • Can they hear the sound and identify the alphabetic character?

  • Teacher says /k/
  • Students answer, "/thousand/ M says /grand/ while kinesthetically writing the alphabetic character with the right path of motion (air writing, backtracking, shaving foam…)

Step three: Review High-Frequency Words (encoding) ii-minute review of previously taught loftier-frequency words:

  • The teacher writes a high-frequency word on the lath.
  • The teacher asks the students to have a mental moving picture of the word. Then the teacher erases the word.
  • Students kinesthetically write the word without a model

Step 4: Examine the Orthography of New High-Frequency Words:Time varies based on the number of words being taught (no more than v minutes)

  • Each day the teacher selects iii-4 of the new high-frequency words to explicitly teach.

Step 5:  Dictation (encoding) 10 minutes:

  • The teacher volition dictate sounds, decodable words, and sentences for students to write.
